According to Produce Report, fresh kiwifruit has been exported from New Zealand to China under the general kiwifruit category since 2010. However, in March 2016, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine issued a notice suspending the import of kiwifruit from New Zealand because they were not on the official list of permitted fruits.

In 2023, France became the first country allowed to export fresh kiwis to China. With the recent announcement, New Zealand became the second country to gain access to the Chinese market for kiwis. Unlike French kiwis, New Zealand fruits do not require cold treatment and can enter China directly after quarantine inspection procedures.

According to the GACC announcement, orchards wishing to export fresh kiwifruit to China must establish a traceability system and adhere to good agricultural practices and integrated pest management techniques. China identified a total of eight quarantine pests in relation to New Zealand kiwifruit.

During the packing process, fresh kiwifruit destined for China must go through procedures such as inspection, sorting, grading, and removing damaged fruit to ensure that shipments are free of insects, mites, rotten fruit, branches, leaves, roots, and soil.

The appearance of contaminated kiwifruit will result in the rejection of the entire shipment by China or even the suspension of imports from the orchards and packing plants involved for the remainder of the season.
