China commits to import more goods from trading partnersAt the China International Import Expo (CIIE) 2014, Chinese Premier Li Qiang pledged to import more goods from trading partners as the 7th China International Import Expo opened in Shanghai recently. A wider opening of China would allow the country to play a stabilizing role in a slowing global economy, Premier Li Qiang told international business leaders in Shanghai on Tuesday, while pledging to import more goods from trading partners. Speaking to more than 1,000 government officials and company executives at the start of the China International Import Expo, Li said that “concerted efforts” are needed to overcome the country’s difficulties and improve its economic outlook.

Last year, Chinese companies signed deals worth US$78.4 billion with international exhibitors at CIIE, up 6.7 per cent from 2022, according to the organizer. This year’s event has drawn 3,500 exhibitors from more than 150 countries and regions, including major multinational firms from carmaker Volkswagen Group to cosmetics brand L’Oreal.

“An exhibition like CIIE is really a unique proposition from China,” said Jean Paul Agon, chairperson of L’Oreal. “It has really been a symbol and a way of opening up China to the world, and that’s why, also we want to promote it as much as we can.”

“Developing business in China has been, for us, a fantastic adventure,” he added.

Since its founding, CIIE has become more than a trade show, with foreign businesses seeing it as an opportunity to build relations with China’s central and local governments, as well as corporate and individual buyers.....See more from SCMP here
